The effects of this group of compunds ranges from harmless and merely unpleasant to those which cause cancer, immune system malfunctions, reproductive disorders and even mutations. Chlorine based chemicals including dioxins, persist in the environment and work their way up the food chain. They make it difficult to apply new technologies for cleaner mills.

Handmade Lokta Paper of Nepal is made by an ancient art that has remained unchanged for over 2000 years. First, the Daphe Canabina (Lokta) is pounded to a fine pulp. The fibers are then soaked in water and heated over a fire until the solution achieves an even consistency. The mixture is then poured into troughs and diluted by adding cold water to dissipate the bark fibers. The mixture is then sifted until a thin layer of fibers has settled onto a cotton mesh screen. Sun-dried and then peeled off the screen, the result is a beautiful piece of earth-friendly paper.
